For you guys, especially ones who have learned both instruments, how long does it take to play something at like a henle 3-4 violin piece?

*

I don't know the Henle pieces but you could mention 1-2 specific violin pieces.

You are watching: How long does it take to learn the violin

As someone who learns both: Violin is much harder to learn. So keep your expectations in the long term. How fast you progress depends on your practice quality & quantity (duh). Expect around a year to produce moderately decent tones, two years to become intermediate, and 5-ish years to become moderately advanced if you practice about daily.

Get a teacher! On piano you can do without, but not on the violin.

Also happy to have you around! Give this beautiful instrument a try!

I was hoping to play some of bach's or mozart's easier pieces e.g bach adagios, violin sonata in c major k 296(?).etc. And if I dare hope, ysaye's ballade one day.

It's also a sort of half baked goal to play in an orchestra one day cause with piano you can't do that unless it's a concerto. Too hard.

I've had this idea for about 2-3 months, I'm self motivated but I'm not confident I won't give up half way.

Btw how would you rank different techniques on the violin as a beginner. i.e bow speed, being fretless, string crossing, vibrato etc. Just tryna narrow down the challenges.

Hope I can make it! Cheers

A lifetime most frequently is not enough.

If you mean rather "to learn to play it to enjoyment of listeners", then that would be between 5 years (fiddling) to 10 - 15 years (moderately complicated classical pieces)

By fiddling is it enough for some of the easier Mozart sonatas?
