You are watching: When does luffy use gear 2
One of Monkey D. Luffy"s most iconic powers, Gear Second, was introduced in the One Piece series in the Enies Lobby arc, where the Straw Hat Pirates famously clashed against the CP-9 of the World Government to rescue Nico Robin. Gear Second established itself as Luffy"s go-to form over time, and it is extensively used by the Straw Hat captain even now in the series.

With incredible speed combined with ferocious power, Gear Second has helped Luffy conquer some tough enemies by making him several times stronger. Here are 10 things you didn"t know about Monkey D. Luffy"s Gear Second form.
Gear Second gives Luffy a huge power boost which was evident right from when he used it against Blueno for the very first time. Although Blueno couldn"t tell how Luffy got so strong suddenly, Lucci was able to discern what Luffy was doing almost immediately.
According to Rob Lucci, Gear Second functioned by Luffy pumping more blood into his body, giving more oxygen supply and nutrients, and releasing more power as a result. The surge in blood gives Luffy a significant power boost, although it is only temporary and burns a lot of energy quickly.
As explained above, Luffy"s Gear Second is made possible by him pumping blood faster through his body, increasing his metabolism drastically. Interestingly, this technique can only be pulled off by Luffy. Evidently, Luffy"s rubber body offers great resistance to increased blood pressure to his body.
In the case of a normal human, the huge surge in blood pressure would be enough to kill them. Thankfully, Luffy"s ability to stretch gives him a pass and allows him to use this double-edged power quite well. However, it does damage to his body, nonetheless.
Due to the increased blood pressure through Luffy"s body, Gear Second gives off a pinkish tint to Luffy"s body. However, this is just the case in the anime. In the manga, illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, Luffy doesn"t get any color changes when using this gear.

Instead, he is seen emitting huge amounts of steam, which is what differentiates it from his base form. The anime makes it much easier to spot Gear Second with its pinkish tint along with the steam that we see in the manga.
7 The Steam
Luffy"s usage of Gear Second is almost immediately followed up by a huge expulsion of steam from his entire body in both the anime and the manga. Although this appears to be an artistic choice, it can be further explained by Luffy burning up nutrients extremely fast due to the high metabolic rate that Gear Second brings about.
With the insanely high metabolic rate, Luffy"s sweat essentially vaporizes, making it seem as if steam is being emitted from his body. In truth, Luffy is simply burning too much energy, which gives off the steam and also causes him to pant heavily as a result.
Much like every other Gear, Luffy"s usage of Gear Second comes with several side-effects, making it a double-edged sword as well. In the case of Gear Second, Luffy is seen to get paralyzed after extensive usage of this ability, as seen when Luffy"s unable to move after finishing off Rob Lucci at Enies Lobby.
After the time-skip, this shortcoming of Luffy has, however, been absent, signifying that Luffy has mastered its powers better. The side-effects seem to be either extremely reduced, or not effective anymore as Luffy has gotten much stronger than before.
5 Its Development
Luffy may appear to be dumb when judged from his face, but he"s undoubtedly a genius when it comes to fighting. His genius often shines when he fights opponents stronger than him, such as Lucci at Water 7. After watching the Soru ability, one of the Rokushiki powers, just once, Luffy figured out how the technique works.

Using the power of his Devil Fruit, the Gomu Gomu no Mi, Luffy essentially created a similar power in Gear Second, but better. However, unlike Soru, Gear Second comes with a set of side-effects, at least when it first debuted.
Luffy was seen accessing this power by using his legs to pump more blood through his body initially. During his training at Ruskaina for two years, Luffy seems to have gotten considerably better with using this ability.
Now, the technique is seen getting triggered in certain parts of his body simply by Luffy stretching the said part, which shows how much he"s mastered its powers. Furthermore, Luffy can use it considerably longer now without showing any signs of paralysis or even getting tired.
3 Usage With Haki
With Luffy having mastered Busoshoku Haki over the two-year time-skip, he is seen incorporating the said Haki type with his Gear Second techniques often. When used together, Luffy"s moves get considerably stronger, as expected.

Surprisingly, Luffy"s strongest move in Gear Second sees him generate fire with Haki, somehow. Although the 3D2Y special seems to hint at this being "Ace"s Flare", others, such as Katakuri, have pulled off similar techniques with Haki, implying this is one of haki"s applications.
When using Gear Second, Luffy"s attacks are named in a rather unique manner. Nearly every move of Luffy gets a "Jet" prefix, indicating the ferocious speed boost this technique provides. For instance, a normal "Gomu Gomu no Pistol" becomes "Gomu Gomu no Jet Pistol" when used in Gear Second.
Moreover, when used together with Haki, most of these moves get a "Hawk" or "Eagle" prefix. For instance, "Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling", when used with Haki, becomes "Gomu Gomu no Hawk Gatling". His strongest Gear Second attack remains to be the Red Hawk, which sees his fist get engulfed in flames.
1 Its Combination With Gear Third
Although rare, Luffy has, at times, used Gear Second and Gear Third at the same time. Luffy"s attack, known as "Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jet Shell" sees his combine the powers of the two gears. Prior to the two-year time-skip, this was Luffy"s strongest technique and the only time it was used was against Moria at Thriller Bark.

However, Luffy suffered incredible damage when using this power, evident from the fact that he simply passed out upon using this technique. Nonetheless, it packed quite a lot of power as Gecko Moria was defeated with its usage.
